IVF equality for LGBT people! But should we really be celebrating yet?
We have some questions...
It has been a big week for queer parenting as news broke that LGBTQ people will no longer have to prove infertility by paying over £10,000 for six cycles of IUI in private clinics before being offered IVF on the NHS. It’s all thanks to a long-running campaign and petition, spearheaded by lesbian influencer couple Whitney and Megan Bacon-Evans along with many others who worked tirelessly to raise awareness of this issue.
So, on the one hand hoorah! But on the other – hang on! I don’t know about you, but any ‘strategy’ put out by our government at this moment in time fills me with more than a little trepidation. Particularly when it will have probably been signed, sealed, and delivered by our Minister for Women and Equalities Liz Truss who is through to Judge’s Houses in the battle to be the next leader of the Conservative party. Truss has made her anti-trans position clear; she oversaw the government's decision to exclude trans people from the planned conversion therapy ban, (plus her penchant for a pussy-bow blouse is giving major B-Tec Maggie vibes so watch out)….
